Portable Brainwave Entrainment
The following MP3 meditation techniques are about making meditating easy, but they also provide ways to have new experiences. The easy part has to do with “binaural beats” or brainwave entrainment, which will be explained in a moment. Recordings that use this technology make meditation almost effortless. The new experience part has to do with the portability of an MP3 player.
Brainwave entrainment was developed decades ago after people noted that some pieces of music tended to relax the listener. From that it was found that there are specific frequencies that the brain can be “entrained” to in order to change one’s state of consciousness. We spend much of our waking hours in the “beta” state, for example, when our brainwaves are between 14 to 30 hertz, or cycles-per-second. When we slow to an “alpha” state of 8 to 14 hertz we enter a meditative consciousness. Theta and delta states are even deeper, although most people would be sleeping when in a delta state.
If music was sometimes able to do this, it seemed reasonable that a technology using embedded beats and pulses in a recording could do it more consistently. As it turned out, this was the case, and brainwave entrainment technologies developed quickly.
Now there are number of products, and all you have to do to meditate is sit still and listen to these recordings with headphones on. Meditation is easier than ever. Brainwave entrainment recordings existed when cassettes and then CDs were the audio formats of choice, but there is a distinct advantage to using them with an MP3 player, as mentioned: portability.
Because of brainwave entrainment technologies and the portability of MP3 players, there are a few new meditation techniques you can try that were not available before. Here are three:
1. Walking Meditation using Brainwave Entrainment
Download any of the decent meditation recordings to your player, and you are free to listen while walking. While this will not result in as deep a state of consciousness as sitting still, it does provide a relaxing and interesting experience. You will tend to see the beauty in things around you more than you normally would.
2. MP3 Meditation Nap
MP3 meditation is easy and pleasant, but it can also be used as a sleep aid. Good recordings using the latest technology will put you to sleep in ten minutes if you are lying down. You get a short meditation session followed by a nice nap. If you have a recording that speeds up your brainwave frequencies when it ends, you’ll wake up as the recording finishes.
3. Creativity Boosting Meditation
Listen to a good MP3 meditation recording while you work on a creative project, and it may increase your creativity. The alpha state is known for producing sudden creative inspirations. Sit still for the first few minutes, then get a paper and pen ready to jot down any ideas you have during a meditation session of this type.
